Do You Want More Australian and Indian Immigration To UK?

By Sikander Hayat
As per this story in BBC, Australia wants UK to open its doors to Australian immigrants in order for Mrs May to secure a free trade deal with Australia. Now as far as I can recall, the whole Brexit issue was about immigration numbers which stood at an influx of half a million people per year into UK.
If Mrs May's conservative government signs such a deal with Australia or for that matter India (with India's 1.2 billion population ready to get on the next plane to UK), what was the point of Brexit and all the pain that country has gone through over the last year and will go through for many years to come. The main reason behind Brexit is an overflowing national health service, overflowing schools, overflowing roads, crowded cities without adequate housing and general lack of resources to accommodate a large number of people.

Any deal which ends up getting more people in to UK will be rejected by the people who voted to leave European Union and will be seen by a vast majority as a vanity project harking back to the lost British Empire. Elites needs to learn that ordinary white people are fed up with the globalisation experiment in which goods/services arrived first which were than followed by people.
There is a view in some quarters that generation born during the second world war and just after is not going to last very long in the future and when this happens, country's population will once again start to go into decline. Immigration now will soften that demographic cliff edge.
This may be true but what is happening now in terms of sheer numbers arriving in UK is stoking resentment in the native population. The South of the United Kingdom is simply full up. No places in schools, no places in hospitals, no places in housing stock, no places anywhere full stop. It is possib le that UK can grant region specific visas which will allow the holder to live and work in certain part of country and nowhere else. For example, Scotland specific visas will only allow people to live and work in Scotland. The moment holder of such a visa moves outside the region, they will lose there right to work. The beauty of this system is that passport stamp can be examined by the employer to see in areas a person is allowed to work.
Any system can be gamed and abused and with some hard work, above mentioned system can be made to work.

As far as the general will of the population at large is concerned, it seems that they want less people to come in if any at all. Granting countries like India and Australia a waiver will only aggravate the situations and inflame the passions.
There is another problem which will become intolerable with more immigration and that is of Islamophobia. Most Islamophobic people think that every brown person is a Muslim and that is why when asked about the population of Muslims in UK, these people come back with numbers  which are hugely exaggerated. Any further  immigration from countries like India will make matters worse in this regards. Let's see what Mrs May thinks about this issue?

  1. On the immigration issue Donald Trump had a spat with Australian prime minister as Trump wants to end the deal which will let 1200 refugees (boat people) currently stranded on Pacific islands near Australian mainland. Australia is not happy with Trump's stance and want to keep the deal.
Having said that, future of the deal is not looking very good as Trump has won the election on anti immigration stance and will be hard for him to let this deal take effect.

  2. Australians are not coming to U.K. as immigrants. They come on a working holiday visa and then go back once the time is up. Very few stay on long term.

  3. United Kingdom's immigration system has gone from one extreme to another extreme. There was a time when everyone was allowed to come in and now no one can come in. No matter how highly qualified you are, doors are slammed shut. The long term impact of this policy which currently only applies to non European immigrants, still has to unfold. But with Europeans allowed to come in and non Europeans forced to stay out, there is a whiff of discrimination at play.
